If you’ve been wondering how to start collecting art, here’s the first suggestion: don’t start by buying art.
Start by looking at it.
Buying your first artwork can feel uncertain.
How do you know what to choose?
How much should you spend?
What’s a fair price?
What if it doesn’t feel right once it’s hanging in your home and you’re staring at it over breakfast wondering what you’ve done?
A little time spent looking, asking questions and noticing your own reactions removes most of that anxiety. Starting an art collection doesn’t require specialist knowledge or a large budget. It requires curiosity, some guidance, and the confidence to trust your own response.
Wentworth Galleries has been in business for 30 years. Over that time, we’ve helped thousands of first-time buyers become confident collectors. Our aim is simple: make collecting art accessible, transparent and genuinely enjoyable.
We specialise in Australian contemporary art and Aboriginal art, representing full-time career artists who are serious about their practice and committed for the long term.
Collecting art isn’t about status. It’s about personal resonance. Meaningful means meaningful to you.
Discovering What You Like: Build Your Taste
The first step in collecting art for beginners is simple: LOOK.
Visit exhibitions. Look online. Spend time in galleries. Browse works of different genres. Landscapes, abstract, figurative, Aboriginal, contemporary. Notice what you’re drawn to. You’ll begin to see patterns in your own taste.
Don’t overthink it. You’re not sitting an exam.
Some galleries can feel overly formal or intimidating - sometimes intentionally. Parts of the art world operate on exclusion. Ten paintings on a white wall for three months and very little conversation if you're not one of the "right people".
That’s not how we work.
We enjoy talking about art. We have amazing, informed and friendly art consultants who love nothing more than finding the right work for you.
We have seasoned collectors who have been buying for decades, and we have many people who have never set foot in a gallery before taking their first steps into the art work - without pressure. Art is for everyone. You don’t need prior experience to walk into our Sydney Gallery or our Brisbane Gallery. Come and say hi!
Great art works almost anywhere. But it does need to work for you. As you look, consider the practical questions too:
Where will the artwork hang?
What size suits the room?
How does natural light change it during the day?
You’re going to live with this work. It's not for your friend or your designer or even us! It should fit into your life, your style, your budget - not just your wall. And you should love it. Your home, your taste, and your instinct should guide the purchase.
Understanding Australian Contemporary & Aboriginal Art
If you’re researching how to start an art collection in Australia, it helps to understand what makes Australian art distinctive. At Wentworth Galleries, our two core areas are Australian contemporary art and Aboriginal art. Both offer depth, quality and long-term interest for collectors.
Australian Contemporary Art
Australian contemporary art spans landscapes, abstraction, figurative painting, photography and sculpture.
Many Australian artists produce work at an international standard while remaining comparatively well priced globally. That means collectors here often have access to higher-quality work at more grounded price levels than in larger overseas markets.
Our artists are established professionals with consistent exhibition histories and serious studio practices. These are not hobbyists. They are career artists.
Australian art today represents very strong value.
Aboriginal Art
Aboriginal art is one of the oldest continuous artistic traditions in the world, with cultural roots extending back more than 60,000 years.
These works communicate story, connection to Country and cultural knowledge through sophisticated pattern and symbolism. When purchasing Aboriginal art, ethical sourcing and proper documentation matter. Our collection is carefully curated with authenticity and provenance assured. How Much Should You Spend on Art?
One of the most common questions when learning how to start collecting art is: how much should I spend?
There is no formula. This isn't a marketing campaign for diamonds! Set a budget that feels comfortable and take it from there. Then allow yourself some flexibility if you find something that genuinely resonates.
If you’re thinking about how to collect art on a budget, consider starting with a smaller original work by an artist you like. Smaller works can offer excellent value while still giving you the depth and individuality of an original.
How is art priced? Why would someone pay 450 million dollars for a suspect Da Vinci? Why is a Ken Knight twice as valuable as a Johnny K? Why do some artists work sell for millions and others for just a couple of thousand?
Several factors influence price:
The artist’s career history, reputation and representation
The uniqueness of the work (originals are one-of-a-kind)
The time, skill and materials involved
Long-term gallery representation and relationships
Market forces of supply and demand
Because we work directly with our artists in some cases for decades pricing reflects a fair and considered structure based on the established market. The rules of supply and demand apply to art too - even more so as they are one off original pieces.
Many of our clients begin with one painting. Over time, that becomes five. Then ten. Then twenty. A collection grows naturally. We had a client buy an entire additional home because they had nowhere to place their new works - beware the addiction of art!
Why Start With Original Art?
For a first-time buyer, owning an original artwork creates a direct connection with the artist. An original carries the artist’s hand, decisions, revisions and physical presence. It’s not a copy of something else. It’s the thing itself. And originals of emerging artists can be purchased at the same price as prints by more established artists. More established doesn't necessarily mean better. And there's just something wonderful about an original. Having said that, there's nothing wrong with prints. Consider perhaps a hand finished print edition or a limited edition print.
Even a modestly sized original can be a powerful and meaningful starting point.
Beginning with a strong original piece establishes the foundation of a thoughtful collection.
Confidence for First-Time Buyers
New collectors often have the same concerns:
Am I paying too much?
Is this artwork actually good?
Will my partner like it?
What if it doesn’t suit the space?
Gallery director Peter Aitken says:
"Trust your instinct. You are better at this than you think."
We remove as much risk as possible.
Wentworth Galleries offers:
A six-month exchange guarantee.
If the artwork doesn’t feel right after living with it, you can exchange it at full purchase price value.
Free home trials throughout Sydney.
We can deliver and temporarily hang the work so you can see it in your own space before committing.
Flexible payment options
We will work with you to help you own art you'll love - including major credit cards and flexible layby options.
These policies are designed for long-term satisfaction, not a quick transaction. We’ve built our business on repeat collectors.
Ask questions
If a gallery thinks your question is silly or you get a snooty answer, RUN! Asking questions builds confidence and builds informed choices. Our team is always available to provide clear, practical advice.
Why Buying From an Established Gallery Matters
We’ve been connecting people with artists for 30 years. Some of our artists have been with us since the beginning. Buying from an established gallery gives you the backing of presence and experience. There are some great new galleries emerging in the market but I've seen so many come and go. And buying art online, sight unseen isn't ideal without good exchange policies.
A physical gallery space allows you to:
View the artwork properly
See texture that doesn't translate to the screen
Colour rendition is a major factor (Seeing art in person can often look different no matter how we try to capture accurate colour.
Understand its true scale, surface and colour
Receive documentation and authenticity
Wentworth provide a complimentary art installation service throughout greater Sydney)
With galleries in Sydney, Brisbane and Shanghai, and three decades in operation, our focus is long-term relationships with artists and with collectors.
