Wentworth Shanghai

After 30 Years Girt by Sea, We're ready to take the best of Australian art to the World in 2026

Connecting Cultures Through Art

In 2026, Wentworth Galleries will take an important step in its story with two new spaces in China. One will be located inside Shanghai’s Hongqiao Airport, and the other within the remarkable Yiyuan Tang Art Park Net Zero on Chongming Island. It’s a project shaped by enduring friendship, collaboration, and a shared belief in the power of art to bring people together.

This expansion grows from Wentworth’s partnership with the Yiyuan Tang Museum, a new museum and foundation in China dedicated to art and international artistic exchange. Yiyuan Tang’s vision reaches beyond the gallery walls, combining art, sustainability, and community with the support of renewable-energy leader Qair and technology innovator Huawei.

Wentworth’s role as Yiyuan Tang’s global partner is about connection: helping to share the stories, techniques, and creative voices of Australian artists with audiences who may be discovering them for the first time. The first of these spaces, a 2,500 square metre gallery inside Shanghai Hongqiao Airport will give millions of travellers the chance to experience Australian art as they move through one of the world’s busiest gateways.

The second site, on Shanghai's Chongming Island within Art Park Net Zero, will focus on the long view: an environmentally conscious, multi-building space that unites art, architecture, and renewable energy. Here, Wentworth will curate exhibitions in partnership with Yiyuan Tang Museum and create opportunities for ongoing artistic exchange.

Celebrating Australian Artists

Australian artists have long created work that is thoughtful, expressive, and technically outstanding. Yet, on the world stage, their art often remains undervalued compared to peers overseas. Paintings of similar scale and quality abroad can sell for many times the price of those made here at home. Wentworth Galleries has always believed that Australian artists deserve to be seen and celebrated internationally not only for their craftsmanship but for their unique perspective. This new chapter gives them that platform, in spaces where their work can reach new audiences and find new appreciation.

Artist Residency Program

Alongside the new galleries, Wentworth will launch an Artist Residency Program in China. It will begin with Australian artists, offering them the chance to live, create, and exhibit in an entirely new environment. Over time, the program will welcome artists from other parts of the world fostering exchange, friendship, and mutual understanding through creativity.

For more than three decades, Wentworth Galleries has worked to share the beauty of Australian art through its Sydney and Brisbane galleries, its relationships with artists, and its brilliant community of collectors and supporters. This next step in China continues that journey.
